Two UNM Theatre and Dance Alums Nominated for Tony Awards The Department of Theatre and Dance is proud to announce that two of its alumni have been nominated for 2013 Tony Awards. Japhy Weideman has been nominated for Best Lighting Design for a Play, and Brian J. Bustos has been nominated for Best Costume Design for a Play. This year’s ceremony will be held Sunday, June 9, 2013 at Radio City Music Hall which will be broadcast live on CBS television. The Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Theatre (more commonly known as the Tony Award) recognizes achievement in live Broadway theatre and is presented by the American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League. This is Japhy Weideman’s first Tony Award nomination. He has been nominated for Best Lighting Design for a Play for his work on The Nance (his work was also seen this season in Cyrano de Bergerac.) Bustos has been nominated for his work as Associate Costume Designer on Cyrano de Bergerac. This is Brian’s third nomination. He was associate costume designer for Priscilla Queen of the Desert and Shrek the Musical, both of which won Tony awards for Best Costume Design. Bustos received his BFA from the University of New Mexico and studied with Dorothy Baca. Congratulations to Japhy and Brian on this recognition of their work!
