Fred Sturm, piano
Piano music of Spain and Iberoamerica, including compositions by Federico Mompou of Spain, Rodolfo Halffter of Spain and Mexico, Federico Ibarra of Mexico, and Heitor Villa-Lobos of Brazil. On the program will be:
Mompou's Paisajes (Landscapes) (1942 - 1960), three pieces inspired by bells and fountains, a lake, and oxcarts in Galicia
Halffter's 11 Bagatelles (1950), a set of very pianistic pieces in a neo-Baroque-ish style; and Apuntes (1936 - 1982), very Spanish in character, the first two written in Spain before his emigration to Mexico following the Spanish Civil War
Ibarra's Sonata One (1978): this is the final piece in my series performing all Ibarra's piano sonatas over the past year and a half; and Páramo Pétreo (2006), inspired by Juan Rulfo's novel Pedro Páramo
Villa-Lobos' Carnaval das Crianças (1919), a suite of pieces imagining children performing their own creations in Rio's famous Carnaval; and Saudades das Selvas Brasileiras (Memories of Brazilian Forests) (1927)
Saturday, October 22, 7:30 pm, Keller Hall. $10/8/6
