Greetings from the Southwest Film Center! This week, straight from Mexico, we’re bringing the winner of the prestigious Camera D’Or of the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, LEAP YEAR (or AÑO BISIESTO in Spanish). Laura, played by Mónica del Carmen, is a woman increasingly numbed to her surroundings. She invites men to her flat on a regular basis for sexual flings, if only so that she might feel something as a result. She pays particular attention to one of these men, the abusive Arturo, whom she perversely views as a way out of her pain. A difficult film that denies the traditional sentiments of a romantic story, LEAP YEAR explores human pain in its many manifestations. Phillip French of The Observer calls it “an intense, powerful and at times deeply painful movie, a serious exercise in sexual politics, and Mónica del Carmen as Laura gives an outstanding, brave performance.” Happy, er, Valentine’s week!
