A play by acclaimed writer Don DeLillo, The Day Room is a brilliant, bizarre, black-comedy that explores performance and concealment. The Day Room runs on selected days from through Oct. 4 in the Experimental Theatre located in the lower level of the Center for the Arts on UNM’s main campus.
“For me the play is about our perceptions of reality and explores the constructions of identity, authority and control. It is a journey into one very small rabbit hole,” says director Dodie Montgomery.
The Day Room opens in a hospital, and the characters: patients, doctors, and nurses are what we expect. However, this world is quickly turned upside down with a series of surreal turns.
In an interview with The New York Times, DeLillo said, “I began to sense a connection, almost a metaphysical connection, between the craft of acting and the fear we all have of dying. It seemed to me that actors are kind of model for the ways in which we hide from the knowledge we inevitably possess of our final extinction.”
Director of the play, Dodie Montgomery, has been an adjunct professor in UNM’s Department of Theatre and Dance since 2004. She has directed over 7 plays, which includes Caballos Muertos, winner of the best Latino Play KCACTF 2010.
The cast of The Day Room includes Nick Pippin as Budge/Arlo Klein, William Dole as Wyatt/TV, Nick Johnson as Grass/Freddie, Kevin Laurence as Dr. Phelps/Gary, Josh Hall-Brown as Dr. Bazelon/Manville, Barbra Casseb as Orderly/Maid, Rashaad Bond as Orderly/Desk Clerk, Cris Iannucci as Nurse Baker/Lynette, and Somah Haaland as Nurse Walker/Jolene.
Costume design is by Professor Dorothy Baca, with UNM design for performance majors Akili Gonzales (scenic design), Slu Maldonado-Stone (lighting design), and Jacob Campbell (props design), along with stage manager Star Edwell.
The Day Room will be held Sept. 25, 26 and Oct. 1, 2, 3 at 7:30 p.m. and Sept. 27 and Oct. 4 at 2 p.m.
Ticket prices are $15 general admission, $12 UNM faculty and seniors, and $10 UNM staff and all students. Tickets are available at the UNM Ticket Office located at the UNM Bookstore or online.
