The City of Albuquerque Public Art Urban Enhancement Program and the Downtown Arts & Cultural District Committee are pleased to present special guest lecturer Cheryl Hughes, Loeb Fellow at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, and Masters of Arts Program in the Social Sciences graduate, University of Chicago.
Cheryl Hughes will present for the first time publicly her findings on the relationship between level of support for local arts and culture and municipal arts departments to Richard Florida’s original top rated Creative Cities. In particular she will present her findings on cities that engaged in strategic cultural planning processes, support public art and use arts and cultural activities to animate and engage public spaces and how cities that embrace such initiatives consistently rank with Florida’s ratings.
In 1999, Albuquerque was Richard Florida’s #1 small and medium-sized region on his Creativity Index. In 2008 Albuquerque ranked 12th. Ms. Hughes’ presentation will shed light on the role municipal arts and cultural departments play in strategic cultural planning, animating cultural venues through partnerships, enhancing urban spaces with public art, and culturally infused urban design that could help ABQ regain its top Creative City designation!
“A Study of Local Arts Agencies: Case for Local Government Support of the Arts” will be presented at the historic KiMo Theater on Wednesday, October 27, 2010 1:30 – 3:00. Ms. Hughes presentation will be followed by an update on the Downtown Arts & Cultural District Cultural Planning process, by A&CD Chair, Dennis Gromelski of Fusion Theatre.
