The Firebugs A Morality Play Without A Moral By Max Frisch Translated by Mordecai Gorelik Directed by Paul Ford When Biedermann, a wealthy hair tonic manufacturer, invites two mysterious strangers to live in his attic (at a time when the city is plagued by a string of arsons) he becomes an accomplice to the hilariously horrific acts of his guests. Although warned at every turn by the antics of a Greek chorus of ever-vigilant firemen, Biedermann; vain, apathetic, and filled with bourgeois guilt, ignores the events unfolding under his nose, and even aids and abets the despicable duo. Written in 1958 in response to passivity in the face of the Holocaust, Max Frisch’s political parable is both a timely and wickedly-funny warning about the consequences of self-deception and complacency.
