Starring Billy Crudup, Woody Harrelson and Patricia Arquette Run time: 114 minutes This film is rated R.
The Hi-Lo Country depicts the American West during the transitional days of the Cold War. Released in 1999, the Western film focuses on the relationships between three adults living and working in the wide open spaces of New Mexico. Two friends, one recently returned from World War II, the other a hard drinking cowboy, fall in love with the same married woman. In keeping with the revisionist modern Westerns it emulates, Hi-Lo Country presents a reserved and poetic portrait of a wind-blown New Mexican town in which no one can hide secrets.
Bernal, Cerrillos, Galisteo, Las Vegas, San Jose, and Santa Fe served as locations for this film based on the novel by New Mexico author Max Evans. Evans’ 155 page novella, The Hi-Lo Country, stems from an episode in the author’s life that unfolded in Northern New Mexico.
As reported in the Los Angeles Times when the movie was released in 1999, “The town of Hi-Lo, where the movie's action takes place, isn't on maps. It is an amalgam of Des Moines, Springer and Cimarron, all small, wind-scoured hamlets in New Mexico that prosper or suffer with the price of beef or copper and other ores. The life breeds or demands men and women who work hard and play hard.”
The film adaptation, written by screenwriter Walon Green (The Wild Bunch), stars Billy Crudup, Woody Harrelson, Patricia Arquette and Penélope Cruz. The storyline depicts an intimate tale of enduring friendship in this elegy to the classic western movie.
