Jonathan Abrams MD Art Gallery Exhibition Features Joe Novak
July 11, 2012 | By Steve Carr
The Jonathan Abrams MD Art Gallery at the University of New Mexico Hospital will host a public reception for its current exhibition, “Joe Novak — Paintings 1981–2004 from the UNM Health Sciences Center Collection.” The reception will be held Thursday, July 12 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Jonathan Abrams MD Art Gallery located on the Fifth Floor of Ambulatory Care Center at University of New Mexico Hospital. The exhibition continues through Friday, Sept. 7.
Novak has been a painter for more than 30 years. His paintings, many on a large scale, are abstract excursions into color and light, with the works on canvas tending toward the monochromatic and incorporating tonal gradations that infuse them with a meditative quality. He has worked on major collaborations in New York and Santa Fe, integrating painting with architecture, sound, music and light.
Novak has exhibited in numerous solo and group shows throughout the United States and Europe. His works are in hundreds of public and private collections, among them the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, UC Berkeley Art Museum, New Mexico Museum of Art, Hood Museum of Art, Frost Art Museum, Cincinnati Art Museum, Tucson Museum of Art, and Palm Springs Art Museum.
Novak lived and worked in Santa Fe from 1990 to 2005 and has expressed a deep bond with New Mexico. During that period, and since, he has donated over 60 paintings to the UNM Health Sciences Center. This retrospective, from that collection, includes examples of his work over a 24 year period, from 1981, when he began painting full time, through 2004.
The Jonathan Abrams, M.D. Art Gallery is located on the Fifth Floor Ambulatory Care Center at University of New Mexico Hospital, 2211 Lomas Boulevard, N.E. Parking is available in the UNM Hospital West Parking Lot Lomas & Yale.
