UNM Art Museum Distinguished Speaker Series with Hernandez-Duran Set for Oct. 18 October 12, 2011 | By Mara Kerkez The University of New Mexico Art Museum Distinguished Speaker Series presents, “Heavenly Bodies: Staging the Mystical Experience for the Early Modern Viewer,” a public talk by Ray Hernández-Durán, UNM associate professor, Dept. of Art & Art History, Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 5:30 p.m. in the UNM Art Museum main gallery. The talk is free and open to the public.
In the early modern period, approximately 1500–1850 A.D., artists working in Europe and in the Spanish viceroyalties in the Americas created images meant to instruct the faithful and to inspire pious behavior by stimulating and guiding meditative states. Hernández-Durán addresses works in the “Sinners & Saints” exhibit that illustrate a mystical event and/or inspire meditational practices. He examines how such ideas are visually embodied in the paintings and considers how each work’s context of production and reception shaped the images and practices discussed.
