PRESS RELEASE / by request of UNMAM AUTHOR AND EXPERT ON A DISAPPEARING ARAB CRAFT, WILL INTRODUCE HER RECENTLY PUBLISHED BOOK, BEDOUIN WEAVING OF SAUDI ARABIA AND ITS NEIGHBOURS. Joy Totah Hilden will show slides and speak about her travels and experiences in Arabia at the Bookworks on October 16. Ms Hilden lived in Saudi Arabia for 12 years and pursued her passion for textile art in markets, deserts and villages. The nomadic lifestyle had begun to give way to a settled consumer society, but her quest began just in time to document its weaving traditions. She will show photos of traditional weavings, including tents, tent furnishings, and camel gear, as the Bedouin transitioned to a settled life. She will demonstrate the Bedouin techniques of spinning and weaving. Her unique book gives detailed instructions in weaving, spinning and dyeing; it tells stories about the people and places the author visited; it describes unique artifacts and materials. Also unique is the picture into an aspect of Arabian life not normally seen in Western societies. The event will take place October 16, 5:30 PM, at Bookworks, 4022 Rio Grande Blvd., NW, Albuquerque 87107 For more information, see: www.dukecityfix.com or Joy Hilden’s website: www.beduinweaving.com.
