A tour of Tamarind Institute with Matthew Shlian will take place on Tuesday April 10th, 2018, from 12:30 - 3:00 pm. We will meet at the STCC Classroom, EDUC 212 (Bldg 67 on UNM Central Campus Map) between 12:30 - 12:45 pm and will walk over to Tamarind Institute at approximately 12:45 pm. Matthew Shilian studied ceramics and printmaking in art school, but his interest in solving problems and creating patterns led him to the Materials Science department at the University of Michigan. When he first presented a lecture to this group, to see how they might work together, he presented his work as an artist, working with kinetic sculpture and paper engineering; the scientists could immediately see how his abilities with paper, pattern, and folding could have direct applications to the work they were exploring on the nanoscale. His work helped the team of scientists to better visualize areas such as proteins and solar technology--specifically how proteins fold or misfold in the case of disease, and how to maximize the surface of a solar cell. His work in paper has led to all kinds of developments in nanoscale technology. Freshman and Sophomore students are encouraged to register and attend. Event Date: April 10th, 2018 Registration Deadline: April 9th, 2018 Attachments:
