CFA Advisement Policy for Art Practices I and II (ARTS 125 and 126)
Agreed upon by David Craven, Ligia Bouton, Nancy Treviso, Darrell Collins, and Deanna Sánchez-Mulcahy on August 19, 2010.
AMENDED by Interim Chair Joyce Szabo and Assistant Professor Ligia Bouton on May 9, 2011.
There will be a three-year grace period (through May 2013) in which students who have previously taken Introduction to 2D Design (ARTS 121) or Introduction to 3D Design (ARTS 122) at UNM, CNM, or a branch campus will be able to substitute these courses for ARTS 125 and 126 respectively. This grace period will also apply to transfer students who have taken these classes, or equivalent classes, at other institutions.
During this period, the rule will be that ARTS 121 can be substituted for ARTS 125 and ARTS 122 can be substituted for ARTS 126. For the duration of this period, these substitutions will fulfill the ARTS 125/126 requirement for graduation. CNM needs to be able to continue to offer 121 and 122 during the three-year grace period. The policy was created to give them time to realign their curriculum (which they are actively trying to do). So, between 2010 and 2013 they will continue to offer 121 and 122 and we will accept them as substitutions for 125 and 126 respectively. After 2013 we will no longer accept this substitution and will have to transfer 121 or 122 as electives.
However, students who have pre-major status in CFA or have been admitted as majors to CFA, and who have not yet taken Introduction to 2D Design and Introduction to 3D Design, will not be allowed to substitute these classes for the new Foundations program. For example, a student who is already a major at CFA could not take Introduction to 2D Design at another institution and expect it to fulfill the ARTS 125/126 graduation requirement. This credit could be transferred as an elective, but will not be substituted for ARTS 125.
