Stories from the Camera, is an exhibition about pictures and the stories they have inspired. Drawn from the UNM Art Museum’s extensive photography collection these artworks were selected by distinguished former faculty and alumni and are featured in the recently published book, Stories form the Camera: Reflections on the Photograph, (UNM Press 2015). Through their own professional practice, the writers represent different generations of aesthetic voices and intellectual directions. Curated by Michele M. Penhall, this exhibition also provides an opportunity to see and consider firsthand one of the most significant university collections in the country.
Artists in the exhibition include Robert Adams, Diane Arbus, Matthew Brady, Julia Margaret Cameron, Linda Connor, Emmet Gowin, Mark Klett, Beaumont Newhall, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Robert ParkeHarrison, John Plumbe, Robert Stivers, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Carrie Mae Weems, Gary Winogrand and Surrealist postcards by Hans Belmer, Marcel Duchamp, and Meret Oppenheim to name only a few.
*UNM Art Museum is closed from December 11 – January 2 for winter break.

STORIES FROM THE CAMERA: A CONVERSATION WITH GUEST CURATOR
MICHELE PENHALL & WRITER EUGENIA PARRY
Eugenia Parry has been discovering new ways to write about art and photography for over forty years. As a professor, she taught the histories of art and photography at Wellesley College (1968-1986) and at the University of New Mexico (1987-1993) where she held the Public Service of New Mexico Foundation Endowed Chair.
Michele Penhall served as the Curator of Prints and Photographs at the University of New Mexico Art Museum from 2004-2014 where she organized exhibitions on photography, prints, video projects and book collections. She received her Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico in 1997 working with Eugenia Parry and Tom Barrow.

STORIES FROM THE CAMERA: A CONVERSATION WITH ARTIST THOMAS BARROW & DIANA GASTON, DIRECTOR OF TAMARIND INSTITUTE
Thomas Barrow studied at the Kansas City Art Institute and with Aaron Siskind at the Institute of Design at IIT. He was Assistant Director at the George Eastman House before moving to New Mexico in 1973 where he taught studio photography and the history of photography until 2001. Barrow also served as the Associate Director of the University of New Mexico Art Museum from 1973 to 1976 and Acting Director in 1985.
Diana Gaston was Curator of Prints and Photographs at the University of New Mexico Art Museum from 1989 to 1993. She then held positions as Curator at the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego and Associate Director of San Francisco Camerwork before becoming the Lead Curator for Fidelity Investments Corporate Art Collection. Gaston returned to New Mexico in 2016 to become Director of Tamarind Institute.

STORIES FROM THE CAMERA: A CONVERSATION WITH ARTIST BETTY HAHN & APRIL WATSON, CURATOR OF PHOTOGRAPHS AT THE NELSON-ATKINS MUSEUM OF ART
Betty Hahn met and studied with Henry Holmes Smith at Indiana University who encouraged her to investigate gum bichromate printing. She began teaching at Rochester Institute of Technology in 1969, first to deaf students and later in RIT’s School of Photographic Arts and Sciences. In 1976 Hahn was hired to teach photography at the University of New Mexico a position she held until 1997.
April Watson is Curator of Photographs at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri. She received her MA in Art History from the University of New Mexico in 1994, working with Eugenia Parry, who first inspired her to explore the complexity and beauty of photography and its history. While a graduate student at UNM, she also worked in the UNM Art Museum’s print room as a research assistant. She has held curatorial research positions at the Center for Creative Photography, Tucson and the National Gallery of Art, in Washington, D.C. In 2013, she received a Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Kansas, Lawrence.
The UNM Art Museum is located within the Center for the Arts complex off Redondo Drive near the UNM Bookstore. From I-25 North or South, exit Central Avenue and travel east for approximately 1 mile. Parking is available at the Parking Garage, east of the Center for the Arts at Redondo Drive and Stanford.

Open Tuesday - Friday: 10:00 am - 4:00 pm, Saturday 10:00 am - 8:00 pm
Closed on Sundays, Mondays and major holidays
