PERFORMANCE (CONCERTO) COMPETITION – GUIDELINES 2015
DATE OF COMPETITION: SUNDAY OCTOBER 4th, 2015
PLACE OF COMPETITION: KELLER HALL
INSTRUMENTAL OR VOCAL – CONCERTO OR EXTENDED WORK
1. Open to full-time undergraduate and graduate (six (6) hours) music majors currently enrolled. There will be two (2) winners who will perform with the UNM Orchestra in the Spring 2016. The date of the dress rehearsal and the performance will be Monday February 29, and Tuesday March 1st, 2016, respectively. The winner(s) will be automatically disqualified if he/she presents a schedule conflict with either the dress rehearsal and/or the concert date. Each of the works to be performed by the winners will have a maximum duration of 15 minutes. The competition results may include an honorable mention who will only be eligible to perform if one of the winners is not able to do so, or in case a winner renounces or forfeits his/her right to perform. As the performance of the concerto competition winners takes place as part of the UNM Orchestra class (233/560), the instructor/Director of Orchestral Activities has the right to determine content (repertoire), guest soloist(s) and the conductor(s) participating in the program in which the winners are scheduled to perform. In consultation with the applied faculty the conductor reserves the right to ask the winner(s) to perform in concert a different work than that of the competition. In this case the winner will not be required to perform by memory. Any of the winners may be requested to play as members of the orchestra on the opposite half to their soloist performance.
2. Once the order of the competition is determined there will be no changes. The applicant is requested to check the schedule availability of his/her accompanist. No requests to change the competition performance order because of the accompanist’s availability or any other reason will be considered. Arranging for a substitute accompanist is the responsibility of the student. The order of the competition will be announced on the Friday previous to the competition. PLEASE CHECK IN AND BE READY TO PLAY (IN THE GREEN ROOM OF KELLER HALL) 30 MINUTES BEFORE YOUR ASSIGNED TIME.
3. There will be three judges, not UNM employees who will recommend the winner(s) to the UNM Orchestra Director. Their decision will be final.
4. The performance competition will be open to the public.
5. A time limit of 15 minutes maximum per student will be strictly enforced. If the complete work is in duration 15 minutes or less the ENTIRE WORK MUST BE MEMORIZED. If only 1 or more movements are to be played with the UNM Orchestra in concert, ONLY THE MOVEMENT(s) TO BE PERFORMED IN CONCERT NEEDS TO BE MEMORIZED.
6. The student MUST PROVIDE THREE (3) SCORES, one for each of the judges.
7. A student may not participate with the same concerto or extended work from year to year.
8. *** APPLICATIONS MUST BE COMPLETED INCLUDING THE ACCOMPANIST NAME AND SIGNED BY THE APPLIED TEACHER. An application not including the applied faculty signature or the name of the accompanist will be considered incomplete. Please submit the concerto competition application to Prof. Kimberly Fredenburgh ( office # 2115) BY NOON, FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 25th, 2015.
