Musical Retellings is the theme of the 2015 John Donald Robb Composers' Symposium, which will explore folk and classical music in new ways. The March 22-26 festival will bring composers Chen Yi, Christoph Maria Wagner, Carter Williams and Vijay Iyer to the University of New Mexico (UNM) campus for five exciting days of concerts and workshops. Performances from Chatter, the UNM Wind Symphony, the UNM Children's Chorus and faculty from the UNM Department of Music will feature virtuosic creations by composers using folk and classical music as inspiration.
Also featured at this year's symposium will be "Buffalo Dance,” the winning composition of the 2014 UNM John Donald Robb International Composers' Competition. Composer Luke Dahn, a professor at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, will introduce a performance of his composition and accept the cash award.
This year's symposium will begin with a March 22 morning concert at Chatter, highlighting works by our visiting composers, and will continue that afternoon with open rehearsals, where you can experience a performance in progress. An eclectic program of contemporary music will end the day in a concert at Keller Hall on the UNM campus.
UNM Professor Kristina Jacobsen-Bia, an ethnomusicologist who focuses on Native American music, will lead a panel discussion on how music retells and reinvents aspects of our culture. The panel, at 10 a.m. March 23, also will include visiting professor in Sociology Raquel Z. Rivera and guest composers.
During the week, daytime events will include more open rehearsals, Meet-the-Composer events, lecture concerts and masterclass workshops. At 11 a.m. March 24 and 25, lecture concerts will combine live performances with visiting composers who will discuss their works and take audience questions.
In the evening, enjoy the UNM Wind Symphony performing in Popejoy Hall on March 23. Virtuosic performances of compositions by visiting and local composers on March 24 will compliment music by John Donald Robb, including a rare video of his experimental electronic work. The UNM Children's Chorus and New Music New Mexico will anchor the March 25 evening concert
A March 26 evening concert at the Outpost Performance Space, featuring Vijay Iyer will close out the 44th annual symposium.
Please see attached pdfs for complete symposium schedules.
