Linnell Festival Fall Reading Series set for Nov. 1-2
Reading Series offers an exciting “first look” at directed readings of works to be performed in the spring

Credit: Pat BerrettThe University of New Mexico Department of Theatre and Dance hosts The Linnell Festival Fall Reading Series, offering audiences an exciting “first look” of works that will be part of the Linnell Festival of New Plays at UNM in the spring. These plays are by four emerging professional writers in UNM’s award winning Dramatic Writing Program: Kevin Hathaway, Irene Loy, Denise Hinson and Rebecca M. Sánchez. Directed readings of their new works are on Saturday-Sunday, Nov. 1-2 at the Box Performance Space, 114 Gold Ave SW. The events are free and open to the public.
2AM Lovely, an unconventional story of artistic self-discovery by Irene Loy is presented Saturday, Nov. 1 at 2 p.m., directed by Julia Thudium. Tia and Max have been renting studio space in this art center for years, but Jayden is new here. She would love to create original work, but how can she when her mother fights her every step of the way? Loy is a third year MFA student in the Dramatic Writing program at UNM.
Matthew Yde directs the reading of Ashes Crossing Yellow Lines by Kevin Hathaway is Saturday, Nov. 1 at 6 p.m. When two estranged brothers are suddenly thrust together on a road trip to claim their fugitive father’s body, secrets are revealed in the healing and hurt that surfaces that will change them forever. Ashes Crossing Yellow Lines is a story of redemption as two brothers learn more about one another in 2,000 miles than they had in 31 years. Kevin Hathaway is a third year MFA Dramatic Writing student from Minneapolis. Loving color and sound, his plays paint a detailed picture of the explosive and tender relationship between fathers and sons.
Matthew Lee directs Complicit by Denise Hinson with a performance on Sunday, Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. Complicit explores the impact of a family tragedy on two cousins reuniting for the first time since childhood. Hinson is in her second year of the UNM Dramatic Writing program. She has had several plays produced, most recently her short play Hush, received a staged reading at the ATHE Annual Conference. Her ten-minute play, Hotel Essex, will be part of the 2104 SCRAP 10 Minute Play Festival in November.
The Linnell Fall Reading Series concludes with Mia Takes a Dip: A Telenovela Original by Rebecca M. Sánchez, directed by Denise Schulz, on Sunday, Nov. 2 at 5 p.m. Rebecca M. Sánchez is a second year student in the UNM Dramatic Writing MFA Program. Her work addresses contemporary social issues through the use of realism, fantasy and creative stage elements. Sánchez’s 10-minute play Hubba Bubba will appear in the UNM SCRAP Out of Order Festival.
Audiences are a vital part of the development of these new works as actors and directors breathe life into these plays for the first time. Admission for all the directed readings is free. The Box Performance Space is located at 114 Gold Ave SW, Albuquerque, NM 87102.
