26th – 7:30pm: UNM Music Faculty Recital. Paula Corbin-Swalin, Voice and Fred Sturm, Piano. Music by Frederic Mompou (1893-1987), a Catalan composer who maintained an individual path in the face of the many schools and movements that arose during his lifetime. He created a very personal sound based on harmonies he “discovered” through his fingertips, improvising at the piano, seeking for combinations of sounds that evoked deep emotional response. He wrote mostly for solo piano, but composed a number of songs as well. The program will include both early and late works for solo piano – Scenes d’Enfants (1918) and Charmes (1921) from his youth, and Paisajes (1942-1960) and excerpts of Música Callada (1967) from the end of his life. Songs will include settings of poetry by Catalan and Spanish poets – Combat del Somni (1942-1951), Cantar del Alma (1941), and Dos Melodias (1945). $12/10/5.
