LIGHTSTRUCK: CINEGRAM WORKSHOP San Francisco-based film artist Kerry Laitala returns to conduct Experiments in Cinema’s fourth annual Ligthstruck: Cinegram Workshop. In this workshop, we will make 35mm "Cinegrams" directly onto film, creating hand-exposed cinema. We will place various objects and materials directly on unexposed 35mm film and print their shadows onto the film with light. This intimate tactility will ignite the hand/mind continuum into a direct interplay, freeing us from ordinary constraints. Working under red safelights in the UNM dark room facilities, we will explore the nature of this light-sensitive medium. We’ll also learn how to create our own Cinegram studios at home. The results of the day’s experiments will be screened at the Guild Cinema as part of the Experiments in Cinema v7.9 festival. For more information on Kerry Laitala’s work, visit kerrylaitala.net
When: Thursday April 19th, 10:00am - 3:00pm Where: Meeting in CERIA 360 at UNM, and continuing to the UNM darkroom
BOTANICOLLAGE: BOTANICAL 16MM FILM New York-based filmmaker Caryn Cline joins us to conduct her unique BotaniCollage filmmaking workshop. In this workshop, participants will create hand-crafted films using just clear 16mm celluloid and the botanical materials that the New Mexico spring has to offer. After gathering plant specimens, participants will flatten and adhere these leaves, stems, and flowers onto 16mm film. We will experiment with the pattern, texture, shape, color and translucency of our botanical materials. The resulting films will be intimate and indexical portraits of our vegetable environment. The finished Botanicollage films will be screened at the Guild Cinema as part of the Experiments in Cinema v7.9 festival. For more on Caryn Cline, visit caryncline.com
When: Friday April 20th, 10:00am - 3:00pm Where: ART 252 on UNM campus
IMPROVISING WITH ACTORS FOR FILM & VIDEO New York-based performance artist and filmmaker David Finkelstein returns to conduct another marvelous improvisation workshop with Experiments in Cinema. This workshop will nurture the kinds of improvised movement and language which grow from a rich inner-landscape of sensations, emotions, images, and musicality. Actors, directors, and artists are invited to take part in this extraordinary, experimental performance collaborative. Learn to access intuitions that will help you create consistently brilliant improvisations for film or video. Also learn camera and sound recording techniques appropriate for improvisation. Emphasis is on helping student find an organic form true to her experience, rather than working within set forms. When: Friday April 20th, 2:00pm - 5:00pm Where: ARTS Lab studio - 1601 Central Ave. NE
Experiments In Cinema is an annual film festival that brings the international community of un-dependent filmmakers to New Mexico to add an experimental voice to the current statewide conversation about movie making. Now in its 7th year, this 8 day event (a Basement Films production in collaboration with UNM’s Department of Cinematic Arts) will screen 65 films from 25 countries. In addition to the international films we will screen four films by New Mexicans including Open by Patricia McInroy, Losing Her Memory by Mateo Galindo, It Takes Time To See by Deborah Fort, and The Great Northwest by Matt McCormick (McCormick’s work has been featured at the Sundance Film Festival and the Museum of Modern Art in NYC). For the third year Experiments in Cinema will partner with Instituto Cervantes to present a special program of contemporary Spanish video art. Additionally, each year the festival includes a regional Youth Film Screening at the historic Kimo Theater, sponsored by the Albuquerque Film Office. Experiments In Cinema will also offer free hands-on workshops to the community including a 35mm filmmaking workshop with Kerry Laitala, a 16mm filmmaking workshop with Caryn Cline and an improvisational acting workshop with David Finkelstein. In addition to the extraordinary line up of films, there will be a number of special events including multi-media performances, presentations by filmmakers Julie Perini and ENMU professor Laurel Petty. Tickets can be purchased at the screening venues, though many of the events are free. Please visit www.experimentsincinema.com for a complete schedule of events and ticket prices.
