Villa-Lobos' Symbolic Quartet Performance 5/3 « Result #7 on May 1, 2013, 9:20am »
Villa-Lobos' Symbolic Quartet is an extraordinary piece, with a unique combination of instruments: flute, sax, harp, celeste, and women's voices. That combination promises a rather exotic range of tone colors, and it delivers. The instruments are asked to blend in many different ways, and to stretch their limits, sometimes in virtuosic display, other times in unexpected effects.
We have a wonderful combination of performers: Jennifer and Eric Lau on flute and sax, harpist Lynn Gorman-DeVelder, Las Cantantes directed by Maxine Thevenot, and myself on celeste. The voices are treated as another instrument, a source of a variety of tone colors. No words appear, only vocalizations, sometimes with sounds that give a particular timbre (ping, for instance).
Villa-Lobos was proud of this work, and used it on many important occasions when he was presenting his music, trying to establish a reputation. The first was the "Week of Modern Art," São Paulo, 1922, a radical (for Brazil) series of lectures, exhibits, and concerts dedicated to the latest in literature, painting, sculpture, and music. Villa-Lobos was the featured composer, and he showcase the Quartet as the finale of the final concert, with a stage set including some kind of scenery and projected images (no details were recorded). Two years later, when he went to Paris for the first time, he included the Quartet in the first concert he organized devoted to his works, and he programmed it again three years later on his second, longer stay in Paris.
Even quite late in his career, in 1941, when there was a presentation of his music in New York City for the first time, he again included this work, and a partial recording of that concert is one of the few available recordings. Surprisingly, it seems that the only other available recording was made in 1956.
So this is a special occasion, a very rare opportunity to hear what I think is a very magical piece of music. I hope you will find it possible to attend.
Also on the program will be choral pieces for women's voices from a variety of late 20th century composers, including Brad Ellingboe, John Rutter, Kenneth Leighton, and others.
Friday, May 3, 5:00 pm, Keller Hall, $8/6/4: Jennifer Lau, flute; Eric Lau, sax; Lynn Gorman- Develder, harp; Fred Sturm, celeste; Las Cantantes, directed by Maxine Thevenot.

Orchestral performance / Arts-In-Medicine « Result #11 on Apr 23, 2013, 4:32pm »
I'm sure you are aware of the existence of the Health Sciences Center Orchestra, which was created a few months ago with the help of Patrice Repar and a few others. I have been the Music Director of the group since its formation, and am pleased to announce that the group will be having its first "performance" this Sunday evening in Room B120. I am advertising it as a "prebut" performance, as our first mainstage concert will be given in the Fall of 2013 in Keller Hall. In any case, I would like to take this opportunity to personally invite you to Sunday evening's performance, and also extend a warm welcome to any and all of the College of Fine Arts Staff and Faculty. I would have liked to have invited you personally, but I was informed by Ms. Wyndorf that you do not have walk-in hours this semester, and that this would be the best alternative.
I would just like to say that this orchestra is a testament to the creative and organizational abilities of the CFA's students and faculty, and I think it will make a wonderful impression on all that attend. I am proud to say that I have put in nearly all of the work to get this orchestra started this semester, and I foresee the group being a vital part of the Health Sciences and the Fine Arts areas for years to come. I hope you will be able to attend.
The details for Sunday are as follows: Date: April 28th, 2013 Time: 7:30pm Location: Room B120 of Popejoy Hall Repertoire: Verdi, La Traviata Overture Mozart, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (arranged for Wind Ensemble) Sibelius, Finlandia Gianelli, Adagio for Strings (PREMIERE PERFORMANCE) Elgar, selections from Variations on an Original Theme 'Enigma', Op. 36 Bizet, Carmen Suite #1

Here’s what audiences are saying:
"Production was excellent."
"Good casting, beautiful set. Well done."
"Blithe Spirit is absolutely stunning."
"The set is awesome and the acting is great."
Till death do us part takes on an entirely new meaning in Noël Coward’s self-described “improbable farce” as cantankerous novelist Charles Condomine invites the eccentric spiritualist Madame Arcati to conduct a séance as research for his new novel. Wild complications ensue when she inadvertently summons the ghost of his first wife, Elvira, much to the chagrin of his current spouse, Ruth. With a cast of UNM’s finest actors, expertly led by prominent director Paul Ford, in a lavish production designed by Emmy-award winner Dahl Delu, Blithe Spirit promises an evening of high style and sparkling humor in this delightful comic romp from the master of sophisticated wit.
